What is TPO and why is it important?
TPO, or trimethylbenzoylphenylphosphine oxide, is a photoinitiator, a chemical substance used in gel polishes, gels, and other polymerizable materials. Its main task is to make these materials harden under the influence of ultraviolet or LED radiation. However, studies have shown that this substance can be potentially dangerous to health. In Europe, where safety and quality standards are paramount, this could not go unnoticed.
New rules, new standards The European Commission, concerned about the health of consumers and professionals, has decided to restrict the use of TPO. The new regulation, which prohibits the production and sale of products containing TPO, came into force on September 1, 2025. This regulation stipulates that materials containing TPO cannot be sold in the European Union.
